Team Manager COACH!
Chapter 13
THIRTEEN BONE-WEARY TEENS filled two pews at Trinity Lutheran Church Sunday morning. They had all come for just one reason: to hear Peg sing. The minister was okay, but Peg was amazing.
Rev. Donnelly mentioned the work the crew had done to help the Abernathys the previous day and thanked them for a godly service. After church, several people stopped to thank them for taking care of another older person. The crew mostly just smiled and nodded. They were really too tired to engage and knew they’d be doing the same kind of hard work the next Saturday when they planted the winter legume to restore nitrogen in the soil. Dennis assured them that he could plant alone as it only required ten to twelve pounds of seed per acre.
They headed to Dennis’s house to plan weekly menus and go grocery shopping. It had become a group activity they all looked forward to each week.
“Do you suppose we should be taking meals over to the Abernathys?” Leanne asked. “I mean, if they are both kind of sick, we could raise some money and buy and prepare meals for the two of them at the same time that we fix the week’s menu and buy groceries here, couldn’t we?”
“Leanne, that is a wonderful idea,” Dot said. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you all planning menus and doing the shopping for us each week, but the truth is we don’t really need that any longer. I’m pretty much back to feeling myself again—even though I’m a little lonely at times. But I could be planning our family meals. Then you would be able to devote your time and resources to helping someone else in need.”
“Oh, Ms. Dottie, you know we don’t do it just because you need it. We do it because we love you and Peg and Dennis. And there is almost always one of us here for dinner each night. It only makes sense for us to help out in any way we can,” Natalie said. “But if you let us use the kitchen on Sunday afternoons for more than your meals, I’m sure we could prepare meals for someone else. Just a frozen hotdish for each night would probably be all that’s needed.”
“You are wonderful girls,” Dot said. “I love you all.”
They decided to float the idea with the women’s society and see if someone might find a way to inquire as to whether the Abernathys could use the help and if members of the church might fund it. Lana was elected to talk to her mother as representative.
Dennis reserved some time Monday evening to go talk to Mr. Dietz at the Chevrolet dealership. He was president of the Boosters for both the Wolverines and the Angelines. He’d also been extremely kind to Dot after their car had been impounded for a while after the drug raids. He’d even had their car reconditioned and cleaned before giving it back to Dot. Dennis had decided he needed a car and Mr. Dietz was the logical person to talk about it.
“I see,” Dietz said after Dennis had explained the situation. “That trip into Boone could become hazardous this winter—especially if Brenda is making the roundtrip twice. That’s a lot of miles to put on her car, too. You know you’ll need to get your mom to sign for any car you purchase as well, right?”
“Yes, sir. She’s fine with that, but I have to do the shopping and make the decision. Of course, she has veto power,” Dennis laughed.
“I don’t have anything on the lot I think is right for you. You can go out and look around, but why don’t I take these specifications and see what I can find and have shipped in. You’ve given me your email address, so I’ll send you a picture as soon as I find something. Are you sure I can’t interest you in a van so you can haul your girlfriends around all at once?”
“That sounds good, but I’m afraid the economy of a car trumps the size. I know it needs to be heavy enough to hold the road in snow and ice, but I’d rather it got more than eight miles per gallon,” Dennis said.
“Let me look around. I’m sure I can find something that meets your parameters at a reasonable price.” Dietz shook Dennis’s hand and went straight to work searching the upcoming auctions for anything reasonable.
Dennis sighed as he walked home. He wasn’t sure if this was just a way of Mr. Dietz brushing him off or if the man was really going to try to find something. He’d hit up the girlfriends to see if one would like to take him into Ames on Sunday.
Time collapsed on itself. School, workouts, games. School, workouts, games. It seemed like it would never end. Tuesday evening, the volleyball team played at home and even with Daphne back at light play, they just couldn’t seem to pull things together. Daphne had more experience and understanding of the game than any of the other girls because her mother had coached her for years, but she still wasn’t ready for a full game. They dropped the match to the Bulldogs in three straight games.
Wednesday the cross country meet was run at 5:30 instead of 6:30 in order to get all the races in before twilight. It was still close with sixteen full teams and a few partial teams participating in the meet at the County Fairgrounds. Janice was within thirty seconds of the first place winner but it was a tight field and at 20:26, she settled for fifth. Tori was only a minute behind and got tenth. Diane and Judith managed fourteenth and seventeenth, but Liz was back in forty-fourth place giving the team a total of 90 points and a fourth place finish out of the thirteen full girls’ teams.
Dennis finally cracked the seventeen minute mark at 16:59, but his nemesis from the Eagles was on top of his game and ran in 16:22 for first. The Bartley guys just weren’t as fast as their female counterparts. The team managed 331 points for thirteenth of sixteen full teams. Dennis was determined to get his time down further, but really hadn’t been working as hard on his running as he had been on physical conditioning for the teams. He wondered how he was going to squeeze more running time into his day.
The volleyball team traveled to the Lightning on Thursday and dropped another match in three straight. They were becoming disheartened and Pat was having difficulty keeping their enthusiasm up. As was inevitable with this group, their heads were already turning to basketball.
The Wolverines football team was home against the Knights Friday night. When it began to rain in the fourth quarter, most of the fans left the game with Bartley trailing 10-41. The crew chose Dennis’s house for their campout that night since they were going to all help seed the Abernathys’ field in the morning.
Though it was crowded, they all elected to sleep in Dennis’s room so they could be naked without worrying about Peg or Dot walking in. Thirteen naked teens built up a lot of heat in the room. They kept the window open a little, but didn’t dare open it wide because of the rain, which continued all night. Dennis found himself in the center of his bed as he worked hard to satisfy Natalie and then Tori. There was a lot of loving going around the room, but this particular lovemaking had an added feature.
Dennis lay on his back as Natalie slid up and down his pole and Tori was being warmed up by Daniella. But sitting naked beside his head were Debbie on one side and Lana on the other. Each girl had a hand in her pussy and the other fondling her breasts. And both were intently watching the hard cock sliding in and out of their girlfriends. Dennis was almost too distracted by the girls beside him to focus on the girl riding him. He could turn his head in either direction and see a beautiful open pussy.
It wasn’t until Tori had ridden him for ten minutes and reached her fulfillment that Dennis joined her, thrusting up hard. Both Lana and Debbie came again. Then, as they settled down for sleep, it was Lana and Debbie under his arms, cuddled up so he could have a hand on their breasts.
In the morning, the rain continued. Dennis’s phone rang early and he reached around sleepy Lana to get it from the nightstand. He gulped when he saw it was Lana’s father on the line.
“Dennis, I went out checking fields this morning and I wanted to check in with you before you went over to Abe’s. I don’t think you can plant today. There’s too much risk of getting the equipment bogged down in the field,” Randy said. “If the rain lets up, we can assess it, but please don’t try to plant in this weather.”
“Yes, sir. I guess we’ll just get another hour of sleep and clean houses or something.”
“I’m sure you’ll find something productive to do. By the way, I’m told the church kitchen will be available to your group for making meals for shut-ins. That should keep you occupied,” Randy said. He disconnected and Dennis sighed as he sank back in bed.
Lana wiggled closer to him and kissed him. She encouraged him to touch her breasts as they kissed. He could feel her humping against his leg, though she was careful not to get too near his cock. Nonetheless, she was intent on her own pleasure and continued desperately kissing and humping until she drenched his leg with her come.
“Oh, god! Oh! I… You… Oh, Dennis, I love you!” she said as she attacked his mouth again. It was at that point that she made contact with his rock hard cock and jerked back to look at it. She gingerly reached out to touch it. “I didn’t… I’m sorry… I should… You need…” She didn’t seem able to get a complete sentence out as she lightly touched his hardness.
“What you just did was beautiful and exciting. You don’t owe me anything for it,” he said. He held her and continued to pet her perfect breasts. “So beautiful, Lana. Just so beautiful.”
She sighed and began to pull away a bit. “Who called you so early in the morning?” she asked, trying to change the subject.
“Your dad.”
“Ack!” she screamed loudly enough to wake up Debbie, who just rolled over and went back to sleep. Lana scrambled upright and looked frantically around the room as if she might spy her father there.
Judith crawled up over the foot of the bed and spied Dennis’s erection.
“Oh! Is this available?” She didn’t really wait for an answer, but crawled over the top of Dennis and settled back on his cock with a sigh.
Dennis was too wound up to passively lie there and let another girlfriend post to her fulfillment. He rolled Judith over, nearly knocking Lana off the side of the bed. He lifted her legs back toward her breasts and began pounding into her. This was so unexpected by Judith that she rose rapidly to an orgasm and brought Dennis with her in record time. He flattened himself against her pubic bone with his cock buried as deeply as he could get and pulsed over and again while he moaned aloud.
“Wow!” Lana said as her fingers plunged in and out of her open pussy until she stiffened in orgasm as well.
“Wow, is right,” Judith said. “That was intense!”
“Oh, shit. We didn’t use a condom,” Dennis said.
“It’s okay. I’m protected. Mom said she knew we’d slip up some time or another.”
Dennis pulled back and come flooded out of Judith’s pussy.
“I’ve got this,” Leanne said, diving between Judith’s legs to lick up the mess.
“And I’ll get this end,” Diane said as she swallowed Dennis’s cock and sucked it clean. “Yum. My sister and my boyfriend. What a combination!”
“What was the call about?” Natalie asked as she watched with some amusement.
“Oh. It’s raining and the field is too wet to plant this morning. Randy called to tell us not to bother going over to Mr. Abernathy’s,” Dennis said.
“You were talking to Lana’s father while she humped your leg and you mauled her breasts?” Roberta asked. “Kinky!”
“Whatever shall we do with a day off?” Amy asked, managing finally to displace Lana on the bed and start kissing Dennis.
“Hmm. We could handcuff Dennis to the bed and have our way with him all day,” Brenda laughed.
The response shocked everyone, including Dennis. He pushed Amy away from him and jumped up on the bed. He leaped toward the door, grabbing his robe. “Don’t! Don’t ever do that! Don’t ever say that! Don’t! Just don’t ever!” He rushed out the door pulling his robe on as he headed for the kitchen. He poured a large glass of water directly from the tap and gulped it down greedily. Before it was finished, Brenda ran to him wearing one of the over-sized T-shirts they kept in his room.
“Dennis! What is it, lover? Whatever I said or did, I’m sorry. Please don’t be upset with me. Please, it was a joke. I won’t ever mention it again.”
“No means no. Never. Don’t. I’m sorry, Brenda. I just couldn’t. I’ll do anything you want, but please don’t ever joke about handcuffs,” he gasped.
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t know. I won’t ever say it again. Oh, lover, please forgive me,” she cried.
“It isn’t your fault,” he said, finally putting his arms around her and hugging her. “I didn’t know I’d react like that. I panicked. It’s okay, baby. I’m sorry I scared you all.” Other girls in T-shirts were standing in the doorway and hall looking at them. “We should go ahead and make breakfast as long as we’re all up,” he said.
“A cool rainy day,” Natalie said, entering the kitchen and hugging both Dennis and Brenda together. “How about oatmeal? And don’t we have some of those sausage patties in the freezer?”
Once they were working to get everyone fed, things lightened up. Peg came out of her room and looked around the kitchen. She grinned and happily declared, “Sisters!”
Fru Elsa, Lana’s mother, took the lead with the Women’s Society to find people who were struggling or were shut in and could use a food delivery. In the first week, they’d found twelve families who could be targets for the teens’ new food service. She’d ‘found’ $500 in donations to cover food for a trial. Some of it was apparently what was collected to pay the teens for haying at the Abernathys’, but the teens had all refused payment. Several other families donated things from their own larders: fresh and canned vegetables, potatoes, carrots, corn, frozen beef, pork, and chickens.
Lily and Dot worked out a strategy for testing to see if the people on the list would accept donations. They would deliver a single casserole to each of the needy families as a gesture of goodwill and neighborliness. Two women would go on each of the deliveries and try to draw the recipient out and see if they would like additional deliveries or if they actually had the perceived need at all.
Saturday afternoon, the teens and the women of the church gathered in the church basement to cook and freeze the casseroles. They had a good time of it. The women got a chance to see twelve girls working happily together to provide food for others. And one boy. They were all amused to see Dennis participating with his harem to provide this service, but Dot mentioned that the girls had all helped him with the farm labor. They had a lot of fun as well as getting a lot of food cooked. That which wasn’t designated yet went into the church freezer, sealed in aluminum trays for later delivery.
Sunday morning, Rev. Donnelly thanked the church’s ‘Guardian Angelines’ for working with the women’s society to meet some special needs in the community and suggested that if anyone wanted to donate to the cause or volunteer for cooking and delivery, they should speak to Elsa.
That afternoon, the girls still shopped and cooked for Dennis, Dot, and Peg.
Sunday evening, Mr. Dietz called Dennis.
“Dennis, I think I’ve found a car you’ll like. It’s a family car, not a typical economy car, but it’s rated at twenty-six miles per gallon highway and has all-wheel drive. It’s been well maintained and we’ll go over it completely here when it arrives tomorrow.”
“That’s great, Mr. Dietz. Can I come over tomorrow evening to see it?” Dennis asked.
“That would be perfect. It should come off the truck tomorrow morning and be all cleaned up and inspected by five,” Dietz said.
“I get out of practice by then. I’ll come straight over.”
“Who was that?” Amy asked as they went back to watching the Sunday evening movie and eating popcorn.
“Mr. Dietz thinks he found a car for me,” Dennis said.
“What kind?”
“What color?”
“How much?”
“What year is it?”
It was soon determined by the girlfriends that Dennis had no relevant information about what could be his first car. He knew it wasn’t a van or a sports car. The rest, he’d find out soon enough.
“I’ve been doing a lot of research on what the best cars are for teen drivers,” Dietz said when Dennis, Peg, and Dot met him Monday evening. “After that accident two years ago that claimed the life of Jimmy Davis and injured two passengers, I had a bit of a crisis of conscience. I sold him that car. It was too much car for a teen driver to handle. Not that I don’t think you’re a good driver, Dennis, but I thought Jimmy was a good driver, too. Anyway, working within your price range, this is what I found.”
Instead of going into the show room, Dietz led them to the garage where a guy was working with a buffer on a shiny dark blue RAV4.
“Wow!” Dennis breathed.
“It had a few scratches on it, but we’ve managed to buff most of them out. I wanted a good wash and hand-wax done before you saw it. The inside is pristine—something you don’t often see on a twelve-year-old car. And it only has 140,000 miles on it. It’s all-wheel drive with a six-cylinder engine. It has a backup camera with mirror display and Bluetooth for hands-free cell use. I recommend you not use your cellphone in the car regardless.”
“This is beautiful!” Dennis said as he slid behind the wheel.
“It’s not a Chevrolet,” Dot said speculatively.
“No. I couldn’t find a used Chevy in the price range that I felt met all the criteria,” Dietz said. “I want to sell a good safe car for a teen driver more than I want to support my brand.”
“What is the price?” Dot asked as Dennis examined the various buttons and dials inside.
“If I put it out on the lot, I’d list it at $9,500. But I got it wholesale specifically for Dennis if he likes it. Complete with the prep we did, tax, title, and license, we come out to $5,495.”
Dennis’s head came up. He’d been listening to the conversation while examining the vehicle. Now it was his turn to do the selling.
“Mom, I never imagined I could get such a nice car for the money we agreed on. I’d like to test drive it to see if it handles as well as it looks, but I don’t think I’d find anything better if I wasted a bunch of time running into Ames or Des Moines all weekend. The tires look pretty good on it, too. We could use it for the family when we want to go to the city or to visit Grandma and Grandpa. It’s a comfy four-door. What do you think?” he asked.
“I think you are already sold,” Dot smiled. “I agree that we should take it out for a test drive. Mr. Dietz, is that possible?”
Dietz handed Dennis the key fob, which was all that was necessary to start the car. He fastened a dealer plate over the spare tire on the back of the car and they all four got in the car with Dennis behind the wheel. He checked all the mirrors and adjusted the seat, noting it had seat warmers, too! Peg, in the back seat, immediately zeroed in on the headphones for the rear seat entertainment system. The door of the garage went up and Dennis started the car to carefully back out.
He drove out into the country on the state highway and then around town before getting back to the dealership. He was beaming.
“Mom? Is it okay?”
“I think it’s your choice. I just need to write the check.”
“Yes!”
