Introduced in 4th grade (chapter 1)
Brian Frost: A couple weeks before his tenth birthday. Short and a little pudgy.
Betts Frost: Brian’s bitchy sister, four years older.
Jessica Barnes: Brian’s next-door neighbor whom he thinks of as ‘Heaven.’ Tall, pretty blonde and destined to become a model.
Drew Barnes: Jessica’s younger, mean brother.
Bill Fisher: Friend of Jessica’s and protector of Brian.
Jimmy Sutton: Friend of Bill’s and protector of Brian.
Sammy D: Friend of Bill’s and protector of Brian.
Introduced in 5th grade (chapter 2)
Angela Kimes: Brian’s lab partner at science camp Very worldly, and the first black person that Brian has ever really met.
Carl Fisher: Bill’s younger brother, same class as Brian, becomes Brian’s protector.
Doug Swift: Carl’s friend who also becomes Brian’s protector.
Brenda Lenox: ‘Early bloomer,’ blonde, outgoing, and leader of the posse of cool girls.
Whitney Anderson: Very tall, thin, and getting taller, member of Brenda’s posse, ‘The Fairy Queen.’
Rhiannon Harris: Light brown hair, taller than Brian, member of Brenda’s posse.
Samantha Cortales: Thick dark hair, member of Brenda’s posse, incredibly smooth, silky skin.
Liz Nowicki: Irish/Polish redhead with freckles, last of a dozen children, very adventurous member of Brenda’s posse.
Introduced in 6th grade (chapters 3–5)
Hayden & Marilyn Frost: Brian’s parents. Hayden works for an electronics company and Marilyn works in circulation at the News.
Cary Olson: Adult supervisor of the paper carriers at the News.
Geoff & John Hopkins: Neighbors and friends of Brian’s that live a few hundred yards down the road.
Miss Sullivan (Anne): English teacher and 4-H Foods sponsor.
The Kowalski Brothers: David and Donald are two junior high thugs and make up a kind of gang with Drew Barnes.
Cassie Clinton: Cute girl who is Brian’s first kiss and sort of girlfriend.
John Clinton: Cassie’s dad who owns a private airstrip that borders the woods.
Doreen Swift: Doug’s older sister, Betts’ best friend.
Eric Davidson: Boy who dates Betts and tries to go too far.
Introduced in 7th grade (chapters 6–8)
Rose Davis: Short blonde with deep blue eyes; a new cheerleader; like Brenda, an early bloomer and totally stacked.
Lionel Trane: 6'5" 7th grader and basketball player; becomes Brian’s friend in Phys Ed.
Sugar Evars: Friend of Lionel, big busted and round butt, barely taller than Brian and very soft around the edges.
Jackson: Friend of Lionel’s who is almost as wide as his friend is tall; muscular football lineman.
Derek: Friend of Lionel’s who plays basketball but is under six feet tall.
Introduced in 8th grade (chapters 9–21)
Hannah Gordon: 5'4" tomboy and Brian’s first ‘real’ girlfriend; cute with a little turned up nose, curly brown hair, bright green eyes, and a light spray of freckles on her nose.
Sarah Gordon: Hannah’s two-years-older sister and good friend of Jessica’s.
Rev. Saul & Evelyn Gordon: Hannah’s parents.
Reggie Martin: Senior varsity tackle and Brian’s chemistry lab partner.
Rod, Al, George, Bob: Rest of the varsity ‘front five’.
Lamar Trane: Lionel’s older brother, 6'10" junior, varsity center on basketball team.
Jeff Lincoln, Birdman, Johnson, Will: Rest of the first five varsity basketball players.
Lynn Holt, Camellia Brown, Sondra: Girlfriends of the first five.
Kirby Moore: High school gang leader and bully.
Ken Johnson (Mr. J): High school chemistry teacher.
Ms. Hammer: ‘The Battle Axe,’ teaches Debate and Senior Literature; coaches the varsity cheerleaders.
Hal, Tim, Theresa, Cookie, Larry: Wranglers and staff at Starbridge Dude Ranch.
Courtney Price: ‘Man-hater’ Girl Scout Brian meets at the dude ranch.
Jennifer Pratt: ‘Stuck-up’ Girl Scout Brian meets at the dude ranch.
Debbie, Allie, Amy, Lily: Girl Scouts Brian meets at the dude ranch.
