6 Breaking Up is Hard to Do
“HEY.”
“Oh. Hey you.” It was Monday afternoon and I was hiding out in the hayloft as usual. The county fair was over and school would start in a week. Betts had only placed second in the horse show so she was being really bitchy. I’d won the barrel race on Silk so that just made it worse. I’d actually thought about masturbating, but I was glad now that I hadn’t. I hadn’t seen Jessica all summer and here she was in the hayloft with me. “Where have you been all summer?”
“I went to a modeling school. I’ve been in class till last week. I couldn’t shake the rat until today. I know he’s my brother, but he’s beginning to give me the creeps.”
“No kidding. I know what you mean.”
“Why did we both have to have such crappy siblings? We should have been brother and sister.”
“Except then we’d probably hate each other and you would never have taught me to kiss,” I grinned. Oh crap! I shouldn’t have said that.
“Got a girlfriend, I see.”
“Oh… well… uh…”
“Don’t you dare try to lie to me Brian Frost. I saw you.”
“You what?” I panicked.
“I got home last week and came straight to find you. I saw you disappear into the woods and thought I’d catch up with you. I got turned around and when I finally found you, I saw you were playing tag. It looked like fun and I didn’t think you’d mind if I joined you, but just as I was ready to yell to you, you took her hand and kissed her. I ran back home.”
“Please don’t tell anyone, Jessica. Please. Her parents are really strict and they’d never let us see each other if they found out. The only time they let us get together is for church on Sunday. Do you know how many Bible verses I’ve memorized just so I can sit across a room from her?”
“You’ve got it bad. Don’t worry. You’re my friend. I wouldn’t tell anyone about you meeting your girlfriend. I just wanted to talk to you, too, for a while. Is that okay, or should I go?”
“No! Don’t go, Jessica. You know I always want to talk to you. I wish we weren’t in different grades. We hardly ever see each other,” I said. It was true. For all that we lived fifty yards apart, our school schedules never let us get together. Maybe that would be different this year, but Jessica would be a freshman and I’d be a lowly seventh grader. The fact that we’d be riding the same bus and attending the same junior-senior high school didn’t mean we’d suddenly be best buddies.
“So, what are you studying with your girlfriend? Biology or chemistry?”
“Uh…”
“I’m teasing. Modeling school was so intense and I didn’t have anyone to talk to or tease. I learned something, though. Maybe you’d like to know it for your girlfriend.”
“What? I mean, we just talk mostly. And hold hands. But, you know? Mostly we talk and play.”
“And kiss.”
“Just once before she goes home. Honest!”
“That’s okay. But I learned more about kissing.”
“At modeling school?”
“Oh, Brian. You have no idea what you learn there. Some from the teachers and some from the other models. I learned about French kissing.”
“What? The French do it different?”
“Sort of. Want to learn?”
“Sure.”
Okay, so I had a girlfriend. It never even crossed my mind that kissing Jessica would be like cheating on my girlfriend. I mean, it was Jessica. Just like I wouldn’t have hesitated to put my penis in Angela’s vagina if I’d gone to science camp. It was science. Jessica took my hand and wiggled up close to me.
“Let’s see how your kissing is. Show me,” she said. I leaned in and kissed Jessica. My whole body started to tingle. Just touching her lips with mine sent chills up and down my spine. I relaxed and just lost myself in the sensation of kissing Jessica. “Wow,” she breathed. “No wonder your girlfriend likes it. You really kiss good, Brian.”
“As good as the French?” I chuckled.
“Different. I think you’ll like this. Put your arms around me. Here and here.” I wrapped her in my arms around her like she wanted. She told me a girl thought holding hands was more intimate than having an arm around her but having both arms around her felt way more intimate. “Now kiss me again, and don’t jump back when I do something. Just mimic me. I think you’ll like it.”
I touched her lips with mine for a moment and wondered what the difference was supposed to be. I liked having my arms around her, but this was supposed to be about kissing. Then I felt her tongue lick my lips and I about jumped through the roof. It was all I could do to just keep kissing her and letting her lick my lips. Then I remembered she said I should do what she did, so I took a deep breath and stuck my tongue out. She pulled back.
“Not hard, Brian. Soft and gentle like the regular kiss. Just let it touch and play.” She closed on me again and I realized my lips were already parted a little and I felt her tongue flick forward. I moved mine out slowly and touched her lips and felt her tongue touch mine. My muscles tensed up and she had to push away a little to get me to relax my arms. The tingle I’d felt when we first kissed felt more like 50,000 volts now. We went back to kissing and touching our tongues together. She’d push her tongue into my mouth a little and then I’d follow it into her mouth a little. And she still kept moving her lips on mine and sucking them a little, so I did the same. My hips did a little involuntary jerk forward and I realized I’d pushed my erection right into her stomach.
We pulled away from each other a little and I discovered we were lying down on the hay. I was still holding her wrapped in my arms and it felt so good. I was never going to let her go.
“I think you’ve got the idea now,” she whispered. “That was much better than doing it with Carmen.”
“You kissed a girl?”
“There wasn’t anyone else to practice on. But let me tell you, this was way better.”
For some reason, the idea of her kissing another girl made my cock twitch again. Jessica pressed against me.
“Don’t scare your little girlfriend with this. Always remember to take it slow and don’t push it. Okay?”
“Oh, Jessica. When I… When we… I feel… I think…”
“Shh. Me too. Thank you for giving me the best kiss of my life. And for holding me. Sometimes, all I want is to be held, you know?”
“Anytime, Jessica. I’m here for you any time.”
“We’re going swimming at Crystal Lake Labor Day weekend. You’re all invited. If I don’t see you before that, I’ll see you there. We’ll have fun.”
I always felt so worldly and grown up when I was with Jessica. It wasn’t just because we kissed and played doctor. I kissed Cassie but we always felt like kids doing something we shouldn’t. Being smart didn’t help. All the stuff I knew, I just assumed everyone else already knew. I was sure Carl and Brenda had been making out last year and going a lot further than I ever did. It was a little freaky to think that everyone I knew was probably masturbating—even my sister. I felt like I was the only one who didn’t know more than everyone else.
Sure, I knew more math and chemistry, but Carl and Doug both knew a lot more about football and my shots with a basketball barely made the rim. What’s the difference?
It was just different around Jessica. She was two years ahead of me, but never made me feel like a dork. I just wished we were the same age so we could be more than just friends. Sometimes life sucked.
I met Cassie on Wednesday at our usual place and we were happy to walk through the woods holding hands. Eventually, we stopped under our big oak before she went home and I kissed her. This time, I put both arms around her and hugged her gently as I touched her lips with my tongue. She gasped a little but didn’t pull away. I took that as a good sign and in a moment her lips relaxed and parted a little. My tongue slipped inside and touched hers, tip-to-tip. I was rock hard and I’m sure Cassie could feel me pressing into her belly. She didn’t move to stop us, so we just kept kissing, touching our tongues together and breathing faster and faster. I had to stop us or she’d never get home.
When I pulled away, Cassie slowly opened her eyes and stared at me. She pushed a little and I loosened the hug and let her step away. There was something going on and I didn’t know what it was all about.
“Brian…”
“That was something special,” I said.
“Yeah. It was. That’s why… Brian, I don’t think I can come out and meet you here anymore.”
“I’m sorry, Cassie. I thought you liked it. You know I told you you’d always be safe with me and I’d never do anything you didn’t want.”
“I did like it. And I wanted it. And that’s why I can’t come back out here.” Huh? “I’m not like Brenda and Rhiannon,” she continued. “I know they go to church and… do stuff… in their youth group. But my church isn’t like that. I’m a good girl. I don’t want to be bad.”
“That’s easy enough,” I said. “I’ll just not do that kind of thing anymore.”
“But I would. You said that was special. It was. It was so special that I wanted to do more than just kiss. Look at me.” She swept down with her hands past her chest and legs. “I don’t even have breasts yet. I’ve got two raisins on a breadboard. And I wanted you to touch them. I’m not supposed to want that. That’s the devil trying to get me to fall. If I came back, I’d want you to kiss me again like that and then do lots more and the devil would win. I can’t come back out here with you. We never really told anybody we were boyfriend and girlfriend, but we act like it. So, I guess that means I’m breaking up with you.” She was crying now and I reached for her to comfort her but she skipped back away from me. “I really liked you,” she said. “’Bye.” She turned to go.
“Better tell your dad not to pick me up this Sunday,” I said. Maybe it was mean, but I only went to her stupid church so I could be with her. She didn’t turn back, but I heard her crying increase as she hurried away.
Aw, crap! Didn’t I learn anything from Carl and Brenda?
I wasn’t sure what Jessica had meant when she said we were all invited to the Labor Day swim at Crystal Lake. Obviously, I wasn’t going with Cassie. Mom solved the riddle at dinner.
“Ford and Ellen are organizing a potluck picnic at Crystal Lake Monday,” she said. “They reserved the pavilion. If you have any friends you’d like to invite, get on the phone. We can only pick up one friend for each of you, but others can come if they can get there.” Wow! Who should I invite? Not that I was going to get a chance to invite anyone. Betts was on the phone until it was time for me to go to bed.
I figured that I’d let Carl and Doug know, of course. If I called Whitney or Brenda, I was sure they’d organize the girls. That was everybody I knew and wanted to see the day before school started. I called Geoff and he got permission to ride with us. There were a couple other guys from our class. It seemed that Samantha and Simon had been hanging out a lot over the summer. Liz invited a guy who was a year older but went to her church. Rhiannon and Doug were still kind of a couple and Doug’s sister, Doreen, was there, too. She’s sixteen like Betts and going to be a junior. Both she and Betts had ‘dates.’ Doreen brought Lee Wilson and Betts invited Eric Davidson. I don’t think Mom and Dad knew that Eric was there just for Betts. Jessica ran off to meet Carl’s brother Bill and another girl I didn’t know as soon as we arrived.
Of course, Drew and the Kowalskis were there. When Jessica found out who Drew invited, she asked if she could ride in our car instead of sitting with the three boys. Since only Geoff was riding with us, it was fine. I had to keep my towel on my lap all the way there, though, because Jessica’s bare leg was rubbing against mine as we sat in the back seat. I got the middle since I was the shortest and Betts claimed the back, rear-facing seat for her own.
We played a ton of games and there were several other people we knew at the park. We played volleyball. Yeah. I’m not even five feet tall and never touched the ball except when I served. And that was only once since it went straight into the net. But it was fun watching the girls bounce. We had fun in the water, splashing and swimming and diving. Carl did a nice jackknife off the board and swam directly to me and Doug.
“You would not believe what I just saw,” he started out.
“What?” Doug asked eagerly.
“See that fat lady in the black suit? She went up to the diving board in front of me and I looked up. There’s long black hair hanging out of the crotch of her suit. It was so gross!”
We started laughing just as the girls came toward us.
“What’s so funny?” Rhiannon asked.
“Um… nothing.”
“Were you telling dirty jokes or something? Tell us,” Brenda laughed.
All three of us turned to swim away and dove under water. Of course, Doug and Carl got away. Somebody had hold of my trunks and I almost lost them. I came up spluttering for air.
“You’re not getting away, Brain,” Whitney said, not letting go of my shorts. “You swim away, I keep your trunks. I am the fairy queen. Now tell us the joke that was so funny.” Crap. Why me?
“Okay, but it wasn’t a joke and you won’t think it was funny,” I said. “Carl climbed up to the diving board behind a lady who had pubic hair hanging out of the crotch of her swimsuit. Lots of it. He was grossed out.”
The girls started to laugh and then looked at each other.
“Oh my God!” Brenda said. As one, all five of them headed for the beach and the changing rooms. Wonder what got into them.
There was a tickle at my feet and I jumped thinking a fish had just brushed me. Then two hands grabbed my ankles and pulled them out from under me. I splashed into the water and swam back up. I was only in water up to my chest, so it wasn’t hard and no one was holding me down, thank goodness. I started to get mad so I turned around to see who my tormentor was. Jessica giggled and jumped back out of my reach.
“Gotcha!” she laughed.
“Yeah. I’ll get you.” I dove in after her and she made a big show of splashing but not really going anyplace. I grabbed her legs and dunked her. She came up right beside me.
“Even Steven,” she said.
“Okay.” I agreed.
“What did you tell all your little girlfriends that got them out of the water so fast. Tell them you saw a shark?”
“Um… I… um…”
“Oh no! You didn’t tell them about that lady with the hair hanging out of her swimsuit, did you?” She broke up laughing. “Everybody’s seen her.”
“Well, yeah. But, um, I don’t know why they took off like that.”
“They ran to the bathhouse to see if any of them were showing,” Jessica explained. “They’ll be back as soon as they’re done being embarrassed.”
“Why are you so calm? Shouldn’t you run to the bathhouse, too?”
“Naw. I already did when I saw her. You should be nice. If you like our little bottoms in these swimsuits, you shouldn’t tease. We’ll cover them up in something like you wear.”
“I like your little bottom,” I said. I blushed and ducked my head under the water.
“Yeah? Throw me?”
Throwing was a game we all played anytime we were in the water. Usually I got to be the throwee instead of the thrower. But throwing Jessica? You betcha! I reached out and put my hands on her bare waist. I loved her two-piece suit. All the other girls except Brenda had on one-piece suits. We bounced in the water counting off one-two-three and then she jumped as I lifted and propelled her away from me. She got pretty good air and made a big splash.
“Again!” she laughed. We did. Then we progressed a little deeper and she said, “Make a stirrup.” I linked my fingers together and she put her hands on my shoulders and her foot in the stirrup. We bounced and counted and she launched. When she bounced, her breasts rubbed against my face. We were just having fun, but when she swam up to me to start again, my hand just sort of brushed her breast. Good thing I was more than waist deep in the water. I just sprang to attention. I launched her again and when she swam back toward me I got the feeling she intentionally rubbed her breast against my hand.
We wrestled a little in the water and I threw her a few more times, almost every time feeling her breast pressed into my hand or against my face. I put my hands around her waist and she slipped down until it was her boobs. The rest of the world just sort of disappeared while Jessica and I played.
“Brian! That’s inappropriate touching,” my bitch sister shouted at me. She was only about five feet away but said it loud enough for anyone nearer than shore to hear. “Jessica, you shouldn’t let the little perv touch you like that. He’s feeling you up. Brian, if you do that again I’ll get Dad to have a talk with you.” I was beet red, but Jessica didn’t seem to be affected at all.
“Betts, you should probably pay more attention to Eric’s hand inside your swimsuit on your ass. You know, they don’t call this Crystal Lake for nothing. Maybe it’s you your dad should have a talk with.”
“You!” Betts gasped. “You better not say anything.”
“Or what? You’ll tell on Brian? Go have fun and quit trying to ruin everyone else’s day.” I’d never seen Betts really put down before. She turned and went back to join Eric, Doreen, and Lee. Betts pushed Eric’s hand away as she glanced back toward us, then they swam out to the other side of the raft. Brenda and crew came back in the water and were headed our way, which meant the other guys were drifting back toward us, too, so we quit fooling around even though we all took turns throwing each other.
