Going for the Juggler

It’s a Circus!

“I DON’T KNOW when or where he’ll come out,” Persephone said. “I can’t find a precedent. Whatever inspired you to give him the Hero’s ring?”

“What you said,” Cadence said. “It suddenly made sense. Female companions can’t become heroes because of the one clause about knocking up a Damsel. But you said, ‘All companions are heroes.’ It made sense to me. We have to be in good health and have a heroic nature. Otherwise, the portal wouldn’t let us accompany our hero. Chang had to be a Hero-in-waiting. He just needed a key.”

“Well, they won’t give me any information other than to say that Hero Chang is well. What we need to worry about is how you will survive when you return.”

“Lincoln? Will you have any problem with me being the boss?”

“My precious companion, our life on Earth and our life on Chaos are two completely different things. I’m just an entertainer. If you want to head up a multi-million-dollar enterprise, go right ahead. I’ll be your court jester,” I said.

“The question is, ‘Are you going to be a pig-headed demigod, like your grandfather?’ You won’t have many followers if you try to use his approach,” Lisa said. “Remember, I respected him, but I didn’t like him. He kept Cosimo and me apart. He robbed you of a childhood where you were loved by your father.”

“I understand, Mom,” Cadence said. “I’m going to depend on the two of you to help me strike a balance.”

“And you will return to Crossroads, won’t you, beloved?” Seph asked. She stroked Cadence’s hair and placed little kisses along her cheek.

“How can any of us stay away when you are here to greet us?” Cadence asked. Their relationship had gotten off to a rocky start, but in the course of our training, the adventure on Chaos, and the three weeks we’d been back on Crossroads, the two girls had developed a relationship as intense as that between Seph and Lisa. “Besides, I have a little pixie on Chaos and I promised her I’d return.”

“How soon should we expect sleeping beauty to be out?” Lisa asked, nodding toward the bedroom where Damsel Diane was still knocked out. “What did you do to her, Lincoln?”

“I made love to her,” I said.

For three weeks, Diane and I had fucked. Twice a day, religiously. Oh, she had orgasms. That wasn’t a problem. But she wanted… needed to get right to the main event and not linger with being romanced. She’d been teased non-stop on Chaos for several months. While the healing chamber had helped her deal with her ordeal, she still bore the psychological scars caused by being kept on edge for such a long period of time. She had consciously cut her mind off from her physical reactions and that would just take time to heal.

On the other hand, it had given Persephone, Cadence, Lisa, and me time to enjoy each other. That had also meant a night of the four of us celebrating the consummation of Lisa’s and my relationship. It was soft and slow and romantic. Seph and Cadence attended us, petting and stimulating us before falling together themselves.

I entered Lisa for the first time. Soft and sweet, she took me slowly and deeply. I caught my breath as I felt our hair touch and mash together when I was fully in. Holding for a moment, I then withdrew and plunged in again. Lisa rose to meet my thrusts as we gloried in the love we had for each other. We kissed. We hugged. Our climaxes came upon us in wave after wave of pleasure.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Damsel Diane watching us.

That was the turning point for Diane. She had seen love and it woke in her more than the desire to have a child. She began, slowly, to thaw and be receptive to my soft touches and gentle words. Sex gradually became less perfunctory. She became more involved. Last night I prepared dinner for the two of us and sang to her. I had switched from the Chaosian cithara to a regular acoustic guitar and she was fascinated with the musical tones of Earth.

Music is one of the great unifying forces of the universe, but it also defines the differences from one culture to another. I knew Chaosian music and the natives there had enjoyed my strange adaptation of American music types to their unique instrumentation. I really didn’t know Cassandran music, though my first Damsel, Ariel, had taught me some as we sang together. I would have to see if Sephie could provide me with some examples on my next trip.

After dinner and music, I’d kissed Diane for the first time. You might think that kissing a woman after you’ve already had sex a few times would be less exciting, but I found it more exciting. As did Diane. I believe it was possible that it was her first kiss ever. At least with a man. Apparently, in the distorted sexuality of Cassandra, kisses were almost exclusively between women. Men were not only uninterested, but were actually turned off by such aggressive displays of affection. Diane experienced the kiss as the first sign of love she had ever been given by a man.

By the time we made it to bed that night, her lips were practically glued to mine and she moaned into my mouth. I caressed her breasts and stimulated her nipples. I made no attempt to tease, but to give her that relief she had been denied so often on Chaos. By the time I entered her, she had rolled on top of me and demanded her satisfaction as she rode. I was only too happy to give. Repeatedly. She discovered the benefits of a restorative and I rolled her to her stomach, lifting her hips in my hands. I entered her again, sliding deliciously into her grasping pussy. She came again and when I released a torrent of sperm into her, her orgasm reached such a crescendo that she passed out.

Persephone had fainted from orgasm before. I believed it was a simple result of hyperventilating during her orgasm. But Diane’s unconsciousness was not simply a temporary exhaustion. She slipped into an almost coma-like state and nothing I could do revived her. We contemplated putting her in the healing chamber, but decided to simply let her sleep it off when Computer affirmed that she was sleeping deeply and peacefully.

“We should probably be sure to have our clothes waiting by the portal from now on,” I said. “And don’t forget the letter. I believe she will get pregnant now that she is truly receptive.”

“You should dress each morning,” Persephone said. “Until she tells us each morning if she has been confirmed pregnant.”

“Damn it! I shouldn’t be getting menstrual cramps on Crossroads,” Cadence moaned when we awoke one morning. A warning wave of nausea swept over me. I looked at Lisa and she nodded.

“That’s not menstrual cramps,” I said. “Come on. We need to get dressed. Quickly.”

“So soon?” Seph moaned. “You will come back to me soon, won’t you?”

“It might take us three or four weeks on Earth to get this sorted out,” I said. “Unfortunately, when we go back through the portal, people will begin to understand that if we leave by that route, we will be appearing again in fifteen minutes. It will no longer serve as an escape route. It will simply give them fifteen minutes to prepare for our return.”

“I will wait for you,” Persephone said. “I will wait for my Hero, his Companion, and my fellow Caretaker. And every minute you are gone, I will love you even more.”

We pulled our clothes on and a moment later, Diane entered from the bathroom.

“How can I thank you, Hero Lincoln?” she began. “I will tell our children of our love, of your heroism, of the deep healing you brought to me. I love you so much that I will spend the rest of my life missing you.”

“Children?”

“The healing chamber says I am pregnant with twins. Thank you, my hero.” With that she turned and used the portal back to Cassandra. The three of us felt a lurch in our stomachs. Persephone hurriedly kissed us and we linked arms, making sure we had canes and Cadence’s letter. We stepped through the portal.

Into chaos!

I don’t mean the planet. In the fifteen minutes we’d been gone, the room had erupted. There were a dozen cops in the room and Wilson and his lieutenant were bent over Big Al’s desk being searched. The capi were all cordoned off at the end other end of the room with their assistants. Only Gino and the other three senior members were standing nearby and a police detective was blocking them from the others as he asked questions.

He was the one that we stumbled into as we arrived. Our arrival sent the room into another uproar. The detective turned and reached toward his weapon, but I grabbed his hand as I appeared to fall.

“Sorry. Sorry,” I said. “I lost my balance. The canes, you know.” I slowly released his hand and kept eye-contact as I stepped away. He didn’t continue to his weapon.

“Where did you come from?” he demanded. Cadence responded. “The restroom. Sorry, we didn’t know you were here.”

“They came through the window,” Wilson yelled. An officer went to the bank of windows and tapped on the glass of each one. Someone had closed the open window. I looked at Wilson.

“Nice try, Wilson,” I said. “How did we come through a solid sheet of glass?”

“And who are you?” the detective continued.

“I’m Cadence Pesciano, the sole heir of Big Al Pesciano. Even though the estate is still in probate, I’m here to meet with the presidents of the companies I own and I do not appreciate having my meeting interrupted.”

“And who is with you?”

“As if it is any of your business,” Cadence said, “this is my mother, Lisa Reynolds. And this is my bodyguard,” she said, turning toward me. I saw her eyes pop wide open. “And my other bodyguard. Now what do you want here? Let’s get your business out of the way so I can conduct mine.” I followed Cadence’s eyes and saw Chang as surprised as we were.

“We’re here to arrest Wilson Reynolds and his associates,” the officer said.

“Well, you’ve got them. Please get them out of here. They weren’t wanted in the first place.”

“We’ll need to question everyone in the room,” the officer said.

“Really?” Cadence responded. “How many lawyers do we have present in this room who have witnessed the police entering to make their arrest?” Eight hands went up, including Gino’s. “Now officer, which of the people gathered here for a peaceful business meeting do you want to question and on what authority?” Cadence continued. The officer contemplated the situation.

“If you have identification, I will take your word for the members of your corporation. However, we will be arresting these two gentlemen.”

“Those aren’t gentlemen. They are former employees who were terminated by Big Al over two years ago,” Cadence said. “I’d like to thank you for your arrival as I was about to call the police to have them removed myself. My identification is in my bag. As you can see, I scarcely have a place for it on my person. Ari, could you bring me my bag?” she called.

I wasn’t sure it was a good idea to treat the grandson of her senior corporate president like a personal servant, but I was blocked by the detective and Ari grabbed Cadence’s bag and brought it to her. The officer quickly opened the flap and looked inside long enough to be certain there were no weapons. He handed the bag to Cadence.

“We’ll think about whether you had just cause to search my personal property without a warrant,” Cadence snarled. She grabbed her wallet from the bag and produced her license. The officer looked at it.

“Is there someone a little older with responsibility here?” he asked.

“That would be my executive vice president and executor of the estate,” Cadence said turning to Gino. He produced identification and the officer examined it.

“Okay,” he said, finally. “Pack those two up and let’s get out of here. The police have always had a good working relationship with the Pescianos. There’s no need to detain any of them. I’m sorry, Miss Pesciano, but you must admit your entrance was startling.”

“Detective, once we have a chance to get settled in here, you have an invitation to visit and get to know the next generation. I want you to know, by the way, that any business that man is engaged in has nothing to do with Pesciano Holdings or any of my companies. If he claims otherwise, we will press charges of fraud and defamation. If I discover any evidence against him as I review the books of the company, I will provide it to you. Please understand, I only inherited this mess yesterday.”

“You remind me of your grandfather, Miss Pesciano. I’m glad to see the company is still in good hands.”

“I’ll kill you for this!” Wilson yelled. He lunged out of the hands of the cop that was leading him and rushed at Cadence. The cane I thrust between his legs tripped him and as he fell toward Cadence, Lisa stepped in front of him and kneed his face. That brought Wilson upright and Lisa grabbed his arm and threw him halfway across the room toward the doors. Four policemen were on him in a blink. Two more had his lieutenant trapped between them.

“I will also press charges for attempted assault and a viable threat against my life,” Cadence said. “You might want to lose the key when you lock him up.”

Once the police officers cleared the room, the commotion broke out again.

“Where did you go?”

“How could you do this?”

“Who is that?”

“How did you get through the window?”

“Where have you been?”

“Gentlemen!” Gino boomed out. “What you have seen should convince you that we have a new boss. However, there was another part of the test. In the Chaos of my life, what have I left as a true legacy? Those are the words Big Al left.”

“He left a son, a daughter, and two grandchildren,” Cadence said. There was a collective gasp. “And this letter, in the care of his son,” she continued, producing the envelope.

“In the test, he left another envelope which is marked, ‘To compare. This will show that the returned envelope is genuine.’ Capi, if you will compare the contents of these two envelopes, please.” The three senior capi approached the desk and opened the envelopes. We pulled back to a quick conference.

“Chang, it is good to see you again,” I said. “I didn’t really expect it. I thought you would return to your own time.”

“It was considered. The powers that be decided that it would create too great a risk. They gave me the choice of an abandoned portal or the one the previous owner of the ring used. There was no way to know where or when the abandoned portal would lead me. I chose to come to this one to help if I could,” Chang said. “I see that Cadence needs very little help, so I’m hoping she can help me. I have no papers or documentation. I’m the age I was when I left Earth twenty-five years ago. I thought that at least here, I might find shelter for a few days while I discover all that has changed in my native world. I’m going to need a job and some papers. Do you object?”

“I offered my assistance,” Cadence said. “We’ll have Gino work on it. The man can work miracles.”

“The documents match,” the elder Ribaldi declared. “I opposed naming a woman as Boss—especially one so young. However, not only has Big Al made his intentions clear, Cadence Pesciano has shown intelligence, courage, and leadership that I can only admire. Al stressed to each of us over the past few years that our jobs were not only to run the businesses he entrusted to us, but to offer guidance and support to the boss. Well, I believe that if we do our jobs, the company will be in good hands with Cadence Pesciano at the helm. I move that we affirm her as CEO of Pesciano Holdings.”

“Second!” called one of the members who had regained his seat at the conference table. The three senior capi returned to their seats.

“It has been moved and seconded that we affirm Cadence Pesciano as CEO,” Gino intoned. I noted that one of the secretaries was taking notes next to Gino’s chair at the table. “All voto favorevole say ‘si.’” There was a chorus from the table. “Opposed, the same.” There was silence.

“The motion has carried. Boss, please take your seat at the desk.” He held out the chair at Big Al’s desk and Cadence sat.

“Could I have three chairs for my advisers?” Cadence asked. “I would prefer them close so I can consult with them.” Gino smiled and had three of the chairs formerly occupied by Cadence, myself, and Wilson brought to the dais. We sat and Gino returned to his seat at the foot of the conference table.

“Boss,” he said. It was all up to Cadence now.

“Consigliere. Capi. Lieutenants. Staff,” she began. “Thank you for your vote of confidence. Especially yours, Mr. Ribaldi. I know that this places you all in an uncomfortable position. Just know and understand that I respect each of you as my grandfather did, and I will always listen to wise counsel. I ask in return, only that when you offer it, it is indeed wise.” There was some laughter.

“The estate is still in probate. So, while I am nominally the owner and Boss, the reality is that Big Al’s Consigliere, my Executive Vice President, Gino, is in control. I expect that I will continue to vest a major portion of the leadership to his capable hands for the foreseeable future. And Gino. I would like you to interview and test Ari Ribaldi as a possible trainee for your position. While I want your wisdom and guidance for as long as possible, I don’t believe a man should be worked into his old age and that a suitable successor should be groomed. Ari has shown himself to be quick, loyal, and thoughtful. Please give him an opportunity to be your apprentice.”

There were murmurs of assent all around the table. “However, there are some things that I wish to move forward with immediately. Big Al separated himself and Pesciano Holdings from all businesses that were not strictly legitimate, creating and acquiring as he did so solid profitable corporations. We are famiglia, not mafia. We will remove the final vestiges of that organization from our company. You are presidents of corporations, secretaries, administrative assistants, vice presidents, corporate security. We will no longer use the terms of the underworld in our business dealings. I will not refer to you as capi. In this room you are members of the board.”

There was some chuckling and a few murmurs and one of the younger capi raised his hand. Cadence pointed to him.

“Are you still Boss?” he asked. There was some laughter.

“Well, there are bosses in most businesses,” Cadence laughed. “However, I think it would be more appropriate to refer to me with the title you just affirmed. As CEO, you may address me as Ms. Pesciano. I also wish to inform you that the gentleman to my right is Lincoln Reynolds. Yes, he is Wilson Reynolds’s brother and as different from his brother as night and day. Aside from being my trusted personal adviser, he will have no role in this business. He will, however, soon have the role of my husband. I will not return to the Reynolds name as I have been referred to under my stepfather. I discovered that my birth certificate affirms Cosimo Pesciano as my father and that is the name I will have put on my new identification papers. Please do not refer to me as Ms. Reynolds. On the other side of me, is my mother, Lisa Reynolds. She has filed for divorce from Wilson and we will do everything in our power to expedite that process. She will probably return to her maiden name of Fiore. Yes, she is Italian. She is also my trusted advisor.” Cadence stopped to look at non-existent notes in front of her. It was timed to give the opportunity for one of the capi to call out.

“Who’s the Chinaman?” Cadence looked up, intentionally not trying to identify the speaker.

“He is my business,” Cadence responded. “A woman must have some mystique. If you must refer to him, do so as Chang. Only as Chang. Not Chinaman or Chink or Gook or whatever other Wop term you want to use. Just Chang. Understood?” There were nods.

“Now,” Cadence continued, “the most important item of business. I need to stay alive for the next nineteen days or somehow Wilson will manage to get control of the company and turn you all into second class mobsters. I’d appreciate it greatly if you united your efforts in keeping me alive.”

After promises to meet with each individual president over the course of the next three weeks and to convene the board again next month, the meeting broke up. Each of the capi filed by the desk where Cadence stayed seated and accepted their introductions and congratulations. The process was interminable, but finally it was just the four of us with Gino.

“I would suggest that you stay here,” Gino said. “There is room for all four of you and it will be safer than going back to the hotel. I’ll have Paolo go get your belongings.”

“Here?” Cadence asked.

“Ah. You have only seen the reception and meeting area. This is Al’s home. Is there anything you need that we can get you, Ms. Reynolds—or I should say Fiore?” he asked Lisa. Lisa came around the desk and hugged Gino.

“It’s good to see you again, Gino,” she said. “It’s been too long.”

“I still grieve for Cos,” Gino said. “You should know that he never stopped loving you.”

“Nor I him. I find that I have no suitable clothes for Earth. Can we go to Lincoln’s house?”

“I would advise against you going, but I will have Paolo bring all the clothes. I’m sure Lincoln has little as well.”

“And Chang has only the clothes on his back,” Cadence said. “Gino, Chang needs papers, clothes, and money. He was stranded on Chaos near the same time you were. Unfortunately, he had no one to go get him and bring him back. I gave him Grandfather’s ring. He is a Hero of Earth.”

“But then how did you…? Ah. I should address you as Hero Lincoln then, shouldn’t I?” he said to me.

“On Earth, I am simply Lincoln. Or if Cadence gets her way, perhaps I will be Mr. Pesciano.” Gino laughed.

“I thought you exited with more confidence than the situation merited.”

“How did we get back in with the window closed?” I asked.

“Oh. The window was designed to deter Wilson. Of course, he thought that as soon as you disappeared, he could keep you out by closing the window. But the portal is on this side of the glass. You don’t have to open the window to pass through.”

“Ingenious,” Chang said. “When I build my portal, I’m going to consider that. Danny’s was halfway down the basement stairs.”

“I will go to work on your papers, Chang,” Gino said. “Welcome back to Earth. Let’s show you all your new home.” With that, Gino closed the conference room doors and turned to lead us into the inner sanctum. It was a six-bedroom penthouse suite with two floors. The upper had an exit to a private rooftop garden. While the public areas of Al’s home were opulent, the inner sanctum was more reserved—even comfortable. I guess there hadn’t been a woman living there in fifty years or more, but it still showed signs of a woman’s touch. Cadence was pleased.

“Home sweet home,” she sighed.

divider

The first attempt on her life was that night. Wilson’s men attempted to gain entry through the rooftop garden. We hadn’t known that Gino placed guards on the roof. In fact, we didn’t know about the attempt until late the next day. We had other things to deal with.

Chang.

His story was confusing at best.

divider

“I had no idea if it would work,” Chang said. “In spite of your assurances, I didn’t feel like a Hero until I actually had to punch that freshly hatched dragon before it made a meal of both of us. A second hatchling was popping out as we jumped out of the nest. The first one immediately attacked the second. I think that without a food source in the nest, the hatchlings must eat each other. That would explain why there are so few dragons with a nest of a dozen eggs. That planet really needs a zoologist.”

“But you got through to Crossroads,” Cadence said. “That means you are a Hero.”

“Alone,” Chang said. “I entered a plain chamber when I got to Crossroads. Like the antechamber when you first arrive from Earth, not an apartment like Danny Sun had. I had hoped to go straight to Mei-Xing, but that was not to be. Instead, a Hero Greeter arrived soon after I did.”

“They put you through the whole induction process?” I asked.

“Indeed they did, right down to having to select a Caretaker. A marvelous and wonderful woman, if I might say so. Her name is Niu. I wonder sometimes if Cassandran women are actually different races or if they are adapted to the Hero or to the region of Chaos where they start their adventures. For all we know, they might not look like us at all when they are on Cassandra,” Chang said. “But no matter. Niu is as beautiful and proper as any Chinese girl should be. And, if I may be blunt, after twenty-five years of celibacy, she was more than a welcome addition to my life. We did not stir from our bed for three days.”

“But what about Selene?” Lisa asked.

“Well, that was one of the complications. I had not been sent to Chaos to rescue Selene. In fact, I had not been sent to Chaos as a Hero at all. In order to enjoy the reward of the Damsel, I had to go on a mission.”

“They sent you back?” I exclaimed.

“Exactly. Of course, I had far more resources at my command than most new Heroes. I armed myself completely when I was in the vault. My Damsel had been kidnapped in the mountains far to the North. I believe I was sent there so I would not have all the advantages of simply popping up in my own province, taking my army, and overwhelming the opposition. The short story is that I rescued the Damsel Leah, took her back to Crossroads and after a month of being passed between Niu and Leah, I managed to get her pregnant and she went back to Cassandra a happy girl.”

“But…” Cadence started. Chang held up a hand.

“I prepared to return to the portal, but it did not open and I did not have the intense discomfort associated with staying too long at Crossroads. Instead, Niu led me back to bed. The next morning, I awoke to the sound of the healing chamber opening and Selene was led to my bed. For her, no time had passed between when we entered the vault and when she popped into Crossroads and Niu led her immediately to the healing chamber. It took me another six weeks before she announced she was pregnant and I was led to the portal to Earth.”

“And you still arrived here at the exact same time that we did!” Lisa said. “That’s amazing.”

“Well, it is not without its difficulties,” Chang said. “Your man Gino is working on getting me papers. That is a good start. But I cannot use your portal to return to Crossroads. I have to acquire my own. I have no job and no money, so that will require me to make my way here on Earth before I can return to Crossroads.”

“You can live with us and I’ll employ you,” Cadence said.

“Thank you,” Chang replied. “That is a welcome, though temporary solution.”

“Why temporary?” I asked.

“We are both Heroes of Earth. Heroes must not work together. We may encounter each other on adventures and, as in the case of the slaver wars, there may be a temporary suspension of rules to achieve something the powers want, but working together either here on Earth or on Chaos is outside the norm. That temporary suspension was the only reason I was granted the reward of Selene, since technically you and I worked together to rescue her. Once I have the necessary resources, I must bid you farewell. Believe me, that will be a sad day for me. I have no people on Earth now. I need to adapt to the changes in history over the past twenty-five years. And I need to establish myself in a place where I can launch my adventures and see my precious Niu again as soon as possible,” Chang said.

It was going to be difficult, even with all Cadence’s new resources. But I was still pleased that we had rescued Chang and he was now a bona fide Hero.

Wilson was released from jail pending trial on charges of racketeering. That preceded the second attempt on Cadence’s life. It was already past the 30-day timeframe established by the estate so Cadence had been confirmed as the heir. It seemed that Wilson no longer cared about whether or not he inherited the business. His primary goal was getting rid of Cadence, Lisa, and me. He had to know that if he murdered us, he wouldn’t get the business. The best he could hope for was life in prison. He would never benefit from the estate of Big Al.

Nonetheless, he led a frontal assault on the penthouse a week after the inheritance was finalized.

People died.

Paolo was on guard duty at the door of the residence when Wilson burst through with two men. Paolo went down, but took the two men with him. The doors to the residence were armored and there was no way Wilson could get in. When police arrived, he fired at them from behind Al’s desk. Rather than return to jail, Wilson slapped the button on the desk that opened the drapes and portal window. Sending a fusillade of bullets behind him, he jumped.

I don’t know what he thought would happen. Gravity.

Cadence and I were married two months later, complete with ceramic wedding rings. We honeymooned on Crossroads and Chaos. Capricie was happy to see us and kept us entertained as we traveled and rescued our Damsel. Damsel Evangeline was overwhelmed by the attention paid to her both on Chaos and Crossroads by my wife.

“I wanted her to know she was having our child,” Cadence explained. “This interstellar breeding program has some serious flaws!”

When we got back through the portal fifteen minutes later, we left on a cruise for two weeks in the Bahamas without any extra women sharing our bed.

divider

Chang took the opportunity while we were gone to strike out on his own. Cadence had set him up with adequate resources to start a small import business in Chinatown in San Francisco. He took the wardrobe with him, having repaired the portal and tested it. A note awaited our return to Big Al’s penthouse indicating that he had met a nice girl who was a black belt martial artist and worked out with him regularly. They were planning to marry and honeymoon on Chaos.

I guess things all work out.

Well, except that Cadence missed the next several adventures that Lisa and I had on Chaos. She was pregnant.

At least, this one I get to help raise.
